exceedingly rare, the culmination of the 1909 national negro conference, which became the naacp the following year. In addition to Ms. Wells' article, W.E.B. Du Bois contributes two pieces: Politics and Industry and Evolution of the Race Problem. Along with sensible pieces contributed by Du Bois, Wells, and Oswald Garrison Villard, there are such oddities as 'The Negro Brain' by Professor Burt G. Wilder.
Ida B. Wells (1862-1911) was a firebrand reformer who devoted her entire life to the issue of the so-called 'Negro Problem,' and the near epidemic of lynchings that followed. In 1889, she bought a third interest in the Memphis Free Speech, a Negro newspaper. Within a few months, three of her friends were accused of the rape of a white woman. The three had been in competition with several white Memphis store-owners. She wrote urging blacks to migrate, and became a prominent voice against black injustice. In May of 1892, the offices of the Free Speech were torched. But Wells was not to be deterred. She devoted her life to putting an end to lynching and crime against blacks. While OCLC locates a number of copies, we were unable to find any record of this book at auction or in dealer's catalogues.
